ABOUT US
John Clarke had already published his collection of poetry, After the Storm and Currock Press had also published a collection in aid of the Samaritans when a meeting took place between John, Gareth Durasow and Jimmy Andrex. The outcome was the publication and launch of Two Many Villains. The venue chosen was the Red Shed Labour Club in Wakefield and such was the success of the event that further spoken word and music evenings were planned: hence the Red Shed Readings now approaching their 25th event.
Since their inception the Readings have featured over thirty guest readers and as many support readers in addition to musical contributions of a fine and varied nature. Equally important is the open mic slot (often praised for its quality) and the half time competition which has never received praise of any description.
Initially set up with a grant from WMDC Experience Culture, the Readings are kept afloat due to door takings, the annual poetry competition and generous support from the likes of David Peace, Julie Mellor and Joanne Harris.
Alas, the Red Shed Readings are no more. They are the Norwegian Blue of spoken word events. Scroll back to our Home page to find out the latest.
